Karbala, Iraq: Arba’een Ceremonies

The Governor of Karbala: “This year, the number of pilgrims visiting Karbala to mark Arba’een surpassed the 25 million mark (in total, throughout the past week – Abu Ali)”

Arba’een, literally meaning “fortieth,” commemorates the 40th day since Ashura, which marks the anniversary of the death of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam, who was killed in the battle of Karbala.

The number 40 holds significant importance in Islamic tradition. The period of mourning typically lasts for 40 days after burial, during which the soul is believed to ascend to heaven.
